In our collective efforts to build a mass movement of principled non-violent
resistance to the U.S.-led war on Iraq, Direct Action to Stop the War (San
Francisco/Bay Area) is calling a National Day of Direct Action and Civil
Disobedience to Stop the War at Home and Abroad.

We call upon all cities, organizations, and individuals to organize
widespread non-cooperation focusing on US institutions that profit off the
war against Iraq:

. Federal and Government buildings
. Oil corporations
. Arms manufacturers and transportation systems

Background Information:
Direct Action to Stop the War is a nonviolent direct action group that came
together in October of 2002 in response to U.S. government actions to build
towards war against the people of Iraq. On March 20, 2003, the day after the US officially declared war on Iraq, tens of thousands of citizens hit the
streets of San Francisco, officially declaring that we would not let
"business proceed as usual" as bombs dropped in Iraq despite the opposition and outcry of millions. We have chosen to escalate the anti-war movement to tactics of nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience - because marches, rallies, phone calls, and lobbying from millions have done nothing to stop this illegal war, done nothing to stop US actions to build power and empire, to build the profits of US companies, and to clamp down on the rights of immigrants, people of color, activists and anyone who voices dissent in the U.S.  As citizens of this country, we are standing in
solidarity with those around the world who suffer from the consequences of
our government's actions, declaring:

We will do what we can to stop the wars at home and abroad!

Our Goals
1. Refocus U.S. priorities on communities instead of corporations, on
enriching instead of destroying life. U.S. weapons have and will continue to
kill thousands directly, and millions indirectly from starvation,
deprivation, disease, exposure, suffering, etc. The long-term effects of
war, sanctions and environmental devastation will last for years if not
decades. California and every state in the U.S. are in the midst of an
enormous financial crisis. We need to invest in, not defend, human needs
including education, healthcare, housing and other essential services.

2. Stop the U.S. government attack on the Iraqi people and other peoples of
color in the Middle East, around the world and here at home. We will not sit
by as Bush constructs an empire for oil and greed.

3. Assert our power to transform our city from corporate profits and war, to
resistance and life! We will create an open, welcoming, inspiring space that
gives voice to the anti-war majority as an assertion of real democracy.

We are asking groups and organizations to sign on in support of our goals
and the action itself.  We believe this will help build our network and
strengthen the movement to stop the war at home and abroad.  We recognize that different groups have different resources, and by combining efforts we can build more effective movements and opposition to the racist
corporate-driven invasions of Iraq and repression at home.
